Roach wants Mayweather, Marquez next for Pacquiao

MANILA, Oct. 23 -– American trainer Freddie Roach prefers comebacking Floyd Mayweather as next opponent for Manny Pacquiao if the Filipino ring sensation beats Miguel Cotto in their highly-anticipated match on November 14 in Las Vegas.

”I want Mayweather as next opponent for Manny. That would the biggest fight,” Roach said during the weekly SCOOP sa Kamayan session on Friday at the Kamayan restaurant in Padre Faura here.

However, Roach would also want to give Mexican Manuel Marquez a chance to fight Pacquiao for the third time possibly in March next year.

“He (Marquez) has been crying a lot and I want him shut up. I really believe Manny can knock him out when they meet (again)," Roach said.

Mayweather came out of retirement to score a unanimous victory against Marquez last September 12 to keep his unblemished 39-0 ring record.

“It will be a dream come true if we can fight Mayweather and Marquez. If that happens, there is nothing more to prove for Manny and we can all retire," Roach said.

Unlike Mayweather who fought Marquez at 147 pounds, Roach said he would allow Marquez to face Pacquiao at 140 lbs.

Pacquiao and Marquez ended their first fight in 2004 in a draw but their next meeting was won by the Filipino fighter in 2008 via split decision. Marquez has been claiming that he won both assignments.

Against Cotto from Puerto Rico, Roach said Pacquiao should avoid being caught on the ropes.

“Cotto is a strong, clever boxer who has a powerful left hook and is solid when his opponent is on the ropes. But we have prepared for everything that Cotto will bring into the ring. Manny's speed and power will be more than enough to handle the bigger Cotto," Roach said.

Roach said Pacquiao is in perfect shape now after his training in Baguio City.

Pacquiao is set to leave this weekend for another two weeks training in Los Angeles. (PNA) LOR/jfm
