Carl Froch - Andre Dirrell scorecard tells a close fight, shows no controversy

BoxingNewsWorld.blogspot.com

It has been almost a week since the Carl-Forch-Andre Dirrel fight in Nottingham, England -the second of a series of fights in the unique Super Six Boxing Tournament – where Froch left the ring with a close split decision victory. But, the debate whether Carl Froch was given a ‘hometown decision’ or not is still very much alive in numerous boxing websites forums.

Both boxers thought they won the fight. “I thought I’d out boxed Froch enough to win”, Andre Dirrell said during the post fight interview. He also added that he didn’t know why the referee took a point (away from him) in the tenth round. And he attributed Froch’s getting the win on having a hometown advantage.

On the other side, Carl Froch thought that judges got it right, “it was close but I had no doubt in my mind that I won the fight”, he said after the fight.

But now that the Froch-Dirrel official scorecard is out, perhaps a better analysis of the scores can be made.

After 12 highly contested rounds, both Daniele Van Wiele of Belgium and Italian Massimo Barrovecchio had Froch scored the bout 115 – 112 for Froch, while Mexican Alejandro Rochin had it 114-133 for Dirrell.

Did the one point deduction for excessive holding cost Andre Dirrell the fight?

All judges scored the 10th round 9-9. This means that without the point deduction, Dirrell would have won this particular round, but not the fight. The final scores would have been 115-113 (twice) and 114-114. Still, Froch would have left the ring a victor via majority decision.

It is also interesting to note that there were four rounds in which the judges’ score were identical – rounds 6, 7, 8 and 10. Except for the 10th round, all were for Froch. It would be difficult to argue that Dirrell won any of these rounds.

As to the other rounds, well they were really close and hence difficult to score. I had it 114-113 for Froch but I could be wrong.

To me, the judges’ scoring isn’t controversial. It only tells that the fight was indeed very close and could have gone either way.

Vegas fight odds fire up Cotto in training

By Abac Cordero (The Philippine Star) October 22, 2009

MANILA, Philippines - Manny Pacquiao remains the heavy favorite against Miguel Cotto, and the WBO welterweight champion from Puerto Rico is using the odds stacked against him to his favor.

“Miguel is driven by the people saying Pacquiao will beat him,” Joe Santiago, the chief trainer of Cotto, told fightfan.com yesterday, just 23 short days to the fight set in Las Vegas.

“It’s extra motivation and he is coming with fire because people are saying he can’t win,” added Santiago of Cotto, who has walked the extra mile in training as compared to Pacquiao.

Fight odds coming out of Las Vegas yesterday placed Pacquiao at -250, meaning you need to put $250 to win a hundred bucks. Cotto is at -190, meaning a hundred wins $190.

Pacquiao is a non-believer of fight odds. Not because he says he doesn’t place bets on his own fights, but because he believes that all bets are off once the opening bell sounds. READ MORE

Nations collide: Manny Pacquiao v Miguel Cotto is Puerto Rico v The Philippines

By Gareth Davies, Telegraph.co.uk

Manny Pacquiao against Miguel Cotto is a sporting war between two countries. No question. Both prize fighters have major profile in their respective homelands.

As the fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Nov 14 gets nearer, expect that national rivalry to become more acute. Cotto’s head trainer Joe Santiago believes both men are clearly fighting for their countries, as well as themselves.

“For the island of Puerto Rico it is huge. Everybody knows what Pacquiao has done and we know what Miguel is capable of doing. It would not only be huge for me and Miguel, but for everybody in Puerto Rico. It would be a huge win especially with what Pacquiao has done in his last few fights.” READ MORE

Team Cotto Update

FightNews.com

From their Tampa-based training camp, WBO welterweight world champion Miguel Cotto’s head trainer Joe Santiago and Cotto’s strength & conditioning coach Phil Landman, along with Hall of Fame promoter Bob Arum spoke to reporters yesterday to discuss Cotto’s conditioning and training as he prepares for the biggest and most important fight of his career. Here’s a transcript of what they had to say.

BOB ARUM: I think this call will be very enlightening. Miguel Cotto’s trainer, Joe Santiago is here and Miguel’s strength and conditioning Phil Landman is also here. I have been to both camps and I am so gratified to see two athletes getting themselves in peak condition. I want to see, more than anything else, a great fight on November 14. To have a great fight, you have to have two well-conditioned athletes and that’s what we have here.

JOE SANTIAGO: This has been an excellent camp. We have worked very hard and our objectives have been met every way up to now. Everyone is happy and everyone has done everything that has been expected and we are looking pretty good.

PHIL LANDMAN: For the most part the work has been on the same format as we have done before. We have changed a few things to address what Pacquiao is bringing to the fight. Miguel is looking super good and I am really happy with the work that has been done. READ MORE

Pavlik-Williams fight off for Dec 5

FightNews.com

“This morning we were advised that Kelly Pavlik’s recovery of his left hand has not progressed as projected by Dr. Peter J. Evans, Director of the Cleveland Clinic Upper Extremity Center,” said Todd duBoef, president of Top Tank, Pavlik’s promoter. “As a result of this Kelly is unable to close his left hand which prohibits him from being prepared for a December 5 middleweight championship defense against Paul Williams. We at Top Rank are disappointed by this unexpected development in his recovery. Once Pavlik is cleared medically by Dr. Evans we will pursue all avenues with regards to a future bout. We appreciate the understanding of Paul Williams, Goossen Tutor Promotions, HBO and Caesars Atlantic City with regards to this unforeseen occurrence.”

'Underdog' Cotto to box Manny Pacquiao

GREG HEAKES, October 22, 2009, Brisbane Times

Heavy underdog Miguel Cotto will carry the hopes of his native Puerto Rico on his shoulders in next month's mega fight against Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

Unfazed by the long odds against him, the 27-year-old Cotto will be fighting for his place in boxing history in the 145-pound bout November 14 at the MGM Grand hotel and casino.

A win over six-time world champion Pacquiao would silence his critics and elevate Cotto to the title of best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, said trainer Joe Santiago.

"When that night comes and he wins, everyone will know that Puerto Rico does have the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world," Santiago said from Cotto's training camp at the Fight Factory Gym in Tampa, Florida. READ MORE
