The finer things in life: A touch of irony as Floyd Mayweather arrested on charges of grand larceny -- Examiner

By Chris Robinson, Examiner.com

On the heels of yesterday’s reports that Floyd Mayweather was the suspect in a domestic violence case, the 33-year old fighter has now reportedly been arrested on charges of grand larceny. The above developments are all in relation to accusations that came from the mother of three of Mayweather’s children, Josie Harris.

Harris claims that Mayweather reportedly entered her house around 2 in the morning yesterday and confronted her about dating another man. She phoned police around 3 in the morning and Mayweather was then escorted from the scene, reports the Las Vegas Review-Journal. Mayweather would return hours later after knocking on their son’s door and awakened Harris who was then sleeping on her couch.

Wait And Pray
Harris claims that Mayweather physically assaulted her after pulling her off the couch, punching her in the face, pulling her hair and attempting to break her arm as well. Harris told her children to flee the scene but Mayweather replied he would assault them in the same fashion. Harris fled to the garage and claimed that Mayweather threatened her life, saying he would ‘take care of’ her and her boyfriend. The superstar pugilist would then flee the scene.

Brett Zimmerman, captain of the Crimes against Youth and Family Bureau, said that Mayweather met with police at 9 this morning and was booked in the Clark County Detention center at roughly 10:45 AM.

The arrest is not because of the domestic violence case but was based out charges of larceny as Harris claims Mayweather took some of her personal items, including a cell phone that she can’t find.

Mayweather’ attorney Richard Wright expects his client to post the $3,000 in bail and to be released from jail later today.

A touch of irony

I find it slightly ironic that Mayweather has been booked on charges of grand larceny as I was considering penning a piece roughly a week ago about his penchant for the finer things in life. After speaking to a member of Floyd’s camp much was said about his lavish lifestyle and his fondness for cash.

The member told me that Mayweather loves to gamble and blow through his money, typically spending on clothes, shoes, jewelry, cars as well as eating out. Mayweather likes to hit up Nike Town and Caesers while also betting mostly on NBA, especially the Los Angeles Lakers. They also said he loves to fly on private jets and that you would rarely catch him at a regular airport.

I asked the insider what they would do to improve Floyd’s image if they had the chance.

“I would have him market himself a little bit more,” they continued. “When it comes down to it I don’t feel that he has had enough endorsements. You don’t see him like a Tiger Woods with a lot of powerful endorsements. He’s with Reebok. Look at Manny Pacquiao, there is a difference between them. You don’t see him all over commercials. That would make him a lot more money.”

Following his recent UStream tirade against Manny Pacquiao, in which he insulted the Filipino fighter’s race and abilities as a fighter, Mayweather has subsequently lost his sponsorship deals with AT&T and Reebok.

There once was a time when Floyd was extremely close to his brother Jeff, who served as his manager earlier in his career. Asked about Floyd’s fascination with bling, the hard-working Uncle recalled a time in the late 90’s when Floyd and good friend Zahir Raheem took things over the top.

“I remember Floyd actually helped him get signed with Top Rank,” Mayweather stated of the Atlanta-based fighter. “Zahir was more of a street kid anyways and he was always hustling in the streets so basically him and Floyd came in one day wearing mink coats into Top Rank’s offices. It wasn’t cold outside at all and I don’t even know what the point was other than they just wanted to show off. I don’t know but it was very hilarious. I think he wanted attention more than anything else. I guess they just wanted to come in and show off.”

Asked where Floyd’s love of lavishness stems from, Jeff revealed that despite the animosity that has existed between the star fighter and his father Floyd Sr. for years, that the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

“I think that he is a lot like he father,” Jeff said. “I think he is always going to be that way it was just a matter of him taking time to get the money he needed. But his dad has always been that way. They have a lot of similarities about them and that is actually why they have had clashes. Part of it is because they are one in the same.”

Of course in the wake of Mayweather’s UStream tirade last week and his recent skirmish with the law, all of this seems elementary at this point. Regardless of what happens Mayweather’s image has really taken a hit and who knows how receptive people are going to be towards a possible ring return from him now.
