Shaw pushes Bradley for Mayweather matchup, jabs Donaire's loyalty level -- Examiner

By Michael Marley, Examiner.com

When a bulldog like Big Gary Shaw is not barking, there has to be a reason for it.

Which is why I called the fesity promoter Wednesday night, to see what's been keeping him off the airwaves so much lately.

Loyalty: The Reach of the Noble Heart"Everything is good," Shaw said. "I'm working on some big things."

Shaw is obviously keen on having Timothy Bradley, who he co-promotes, get a chance to fight Manny Pacquiao with the attendant rich paynight.

"Pacquiao is great but he only fights twice a year. I'd like to see Tim fight either Floyd Mayweather or Pacquiao or both of them, really. Tim is a natural opponent for either or both of them. And fighting at 147 pounds is not an issue."

I didn't interject that the mercurial "Money" fights once a year...if we're so lucky.

Like most boxing insiders, Shaw isn't sure when Mayweather will make a move to return to the ring.

"I think you can see that Floyd is his own man," Shaw said. "He'll decide when he will come back and fight again and nobody else will tell him when.

"Nobody tells Floyd what to do."

Shaw was dumped by Filipino Flash Nonito Donaire Jr., whose plan to dump Bob Arum and Top Rank, has been gummed up by arbitrator and former California State Superior Judge Daniel Weinstein.

It was Weinstein, man in the middle of the Top Rank-Golden Boy Manny Pacquiao dispute, who has enjoined GBP from promoting the red-hot bantamweight king Donaire until he's finished contractual obligations for Arum's troupe.

First, Shaw assessed Donaire's ability.

"I think that Nonito's a terrrific fighter. I think he is a terrific asset. But loyalty is not his strong suit, let's put it that way," Shaw said. "His loyalty does not rise to the 100 percent level."

Donaire left Shaw claiming that the New Jersey-based promoter did not deliver him the major bouts he desired.
This was after Donaire stopped Vic Darchinyan in five rounds in one of the biggest upsets of 2007.

When he signed with Top Rank, Donaire said: "I’m a very ambitious person,” Donaire said. “I’m never the kind who’s going to be satisfied with anything. I want to fight the best out there. Bring them, whoever they are. I’m not backing out on anyone Mr. Arum wants to put in front of me.”

Floyd “Pretty Boy” “Money” Mayweather Jr. “The Master of the Ring” -- Eastside Boxing

By Eugene Martinez, Eastside Boxing

“ Money”

Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr. is the most paradoxical and enigmatic personality in the professional sport of boxing. There is something about him that is inexplicable. He can be described as rare, remarkable, phenomenal, and at the same time he is baffling, disturbing, and outlandish. Floyd may be suffering from “ Jekyll Hyde Syndrome” “Pretty Boy” is the young man with that boyish smiling face from Grand Rapids, Michigan and “Money” is the personification of the “Root of all Evil”

Floyd Mayweather Jr. Autographed/Hand Signed With Championship Belt 8x10 Photo (Online Authentics)Why does “Money want 100 million dollars to fight Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao? Why has he taken time off during the prime of his boxing career? Why legal problems of eight felony counts from grand larceny to coercion, which can end his illustrious career if he is found guilty, and 28 years in the Nevada State Prison.

There is also the ongoing defamation of character lawsuit that was filed by Manny Pacquiao’s attorneys. Furthermore for the second time in 3 years “Money” is in trouble once again with the IRS for unpaid taxes of 3.4 million dollars for the year 2009. This mega-million earning machine has set PPV television viewing records and has co-produced the HBO 7/24, featuring footage of a series of countdowns of fighters in preparation for their upcoming bouts, gaining them national exposure on HBO. “Money” also possesses promoting skills that generate earnings for Mayweather Promotions LLC. With that cash flow “Money” lives a lavish lifestyle, betting on sports, going on vacations, and puchasing luxury cars. They say “Money Can’t Buy You Love”. This is a commodity that “Money” has a dire need for these days. How will “Money” overcome these monstrous hurdles and come out on top of the game? The only answer to this question is; “this is something only “Money” can do, or maybe he will hire his consultant “Pretty Boy” Who knows?

“Pretty Boy”

Floyd “Pretty Boy” Mayweather is one of the most gifted and prodigious boxers to ever lace up the gloves. This is marked by a stupendous record of ( 41-0-0-25 KO’s) his style of fighting is a true force of nature. From the orthodox stance he hold his right hand high, the left hand at waist level, his chin is tucked under his left shoulder, and he rolls his shoulders in a rhythmic fashion. His ability to adjust to any style is an art to behold. The 34 year old veteran continues to display that his skills in the ring are still in tacked. He demonstrated those skills in his latest match over 12 month ago against Sugar Shane Mosley ( 46-6-1-39 KO’s) “Pretty Boy” won by a unanimous decision on May 5th 2010 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas, Nevada. “Pretty Boy” has only fought 3 times since May 5th 2007, defeating Oscar “ Golden Boy” De La Hoya by a split decision and won the WBC Junior Middleweight Title , in Las Vegas. Once again on December 8th 2007, he then retained his title with an impressive 10 round TKO of Ricky “Hitman Hatton (45-2-0-32 KO’s) considering his 7 moth layoff, he wanted to prove that he was still on top of his game, by demonstrating a masterful display described by “Pretty Boy” as his “Check Punch” This technique is done by bouncing off the ropes, and simultaneously moving to the left and throwing a left hook, or in the opposite direction and throwing a right hook.

After his retirement 21 months later “Pretty Boy” came back to meet Juan Manuel Marquez (52-5-0-38 KO’s) at a 144 pound catch weight. The scene was set at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, Las Vegas Nevada. It was the weekend that coincided with Mexican Independence Day. The Mexican fans flocked into the arena to cheer on their Mexican boxing idol. Unfortunately it was a lopsided win in favor of “Pretty Boy”

This is a microcosm profile of a boxer that is a 5 time World Champion, where he has won 9 World Titles, in five different weight classes. In addition to that he is the #1 ranked Welter Weight, and is considered by many the #1 pound per pound boxer in the world, according to BoxRec, Fox Sports, and BBC Sports. It is only a matter of time before “Pretty Boy” comes back out of retirement or vacation, or whatever seems fitting.

“Pretty boy is awakened by a genetic inclination, like a bear coming out after his winter hibernation, hungry and ready to devour his prey. So it is likewise with “Pretty Boy” when he is up at 2:00 AM, and starts his road work. While his opponents are still slumbering, he is gaining momentum to administer his crunching blow. This is the true essence of the one we call “Pretty Boy”

“The Master of the Ring”

Floyd “ Pretty Boy” “Money” Mayweather Jr, is in his own right “ Master of the Ring” He controls and dictates the direction of all his fights. Like a true General in the squared circle. He has masterminded clinical and strategic wins against World Champions such as; Super Featherweight Champion Genaro “ Chicanito” Hernandez, Lightweight Champion Jose Luis “ El Temible” Castillo, Junior Welterweight Champion Arturo “Thunder” Gatti, Welterweight Champion Zab “Super” Judah and Junior Middleweight Champion Oscar “Golden Boy” De La Hoya. “ the Master of the Ring” has compiled 13 title defenses in all five weight divisions put together. Surely he has earned the title of being a “Mexican Assassin” Like his uncle and trainer Former WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Roger “Black Mamba” Mayweather. This Master comes from a pedigree of fighters, and started his tutelage under his father Floyd Mayweather Sr, not long after he started walking. When his father was sent to prison on drug charges, his uncle Roger took hold of the reins of his successful boxing career.

Though the “Master of the Rings” future may seem unsure, and somewhat obscure. What will happen when he emerges from his own isolation back into the sport that has raised him from childhood? Who do you think will appear for the next showdown? Will it be “Money” “Pretty Boy” or “The Master of theRing?

Pacquiao, Roach LA arrival -- FightNews

FightNews.com

TITLE DVD - Freddie Roach's Punching Bag TrainingFreddie Roach, chief trainer of Manny Pacquiao arrives in Los Angeles from the Philippines Saturday night to prepare Pacquiao for his upcoming world welterweight mega fight against “Sugar” Shane Mosley on Saturday, May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Pacquiao vs. Mosley is promoted by Top Rank in association with MP Promotions, Sugar Shane Mosley Promotions, Tecate and MGM Grand. The Pacquiao vs. Mosley telecast will be available live on SHOWTIME Pay-Per-View.

Mosley sees shock win -- Manila Bulletin

By Nick Giongco, Manila Bulletin

Manny Pacquiao might tweak his fighting style a bit by being a boxer but Shane Mosley said the Filipino will revert to his old ways of being a banger and that is when he is going to make his move.

"He might move a little more or try to give me angles more, but other than that, he’s still going to come and fight because he’s a fighter," Mosley told fighthype five weeks before they collide on May 7 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Shaq vs. Sugar Shane Mosley/Penn & Teller [HD]"I know I’m going to shock a lot of people. It’s going to shock people when they see that I’m able to do what I do," said the 39-year-old American, who is a huge 6-1 underdog.

Mosley is so confident of a win that when told about plans to see Pacquiao face Floyd Mayweather in what could be the richest fight in the history of the fight game, Mosley said he doesn’t see it taking place.

"That’s not going to happen," said Mosley from his high-altitude training camp in Big Bear, California. "He’s going to have to see me again. I’m sorry about that, but Floyd’s going to have to see me again."

Mosley said Pacquiao may have slowed down a bit and is no longer that hungry based on reports that the reigning pound-for-pound king is always jazzed up.

"Well, that shows what’s about to go down, you know. Remember when (Antonio) Margarito was like that? Margarito came in with his sunglasses and he was all Hollywood. Then he had the Harley Davidson given to him and all that stuff. And then we fought. He came in looking a different way than he went out."

IRS Hits Floyd Mayweather Jr. Again -- FOX

myFOXphoenix.com

(NewsCore) - DETROIT -- Boxing legend Floyd Mayweather Jr. is facing a $3.4 million IRS bill for unpaid taxes from 2009, The Detroit News reported late Friday.

Stand Up to the IRSThe latest IRS penalty for back taxes comes three years after Mayweather agreed to pay the IRS $5.6 million in unpaid taxes from 2007.

The undefeated Mayweather, who earns millions of dollars per fight, has recently been bragging about the massive cash he has won from betting on NBA games.

"Today was a good day. It took 24 minutes to make $40,000 dollars on the Portland Trailblazers," he tweeted at the end of March.

Earlier in February he also bragged about the thousands of dollars he won from a Dallas Mavericks game and later from a Detroit Pistons win.

The boxer's tax dispute comes amid a series of courtroom fights ahead of him in April.

Mayweather faces an April 25 trial date on a battery charge over an altercation with a security guard for his homeowners association, who claimed Mayweather poked him during a November argument regarding cars parking outside Mayweather's home.

The 34-year-old also faces a court hearing on April 28 on domestic violence charges that could send the fighter to prison for up to 34 years if convicted on all charges, which include felony counts of grand larceny, coercion and robbery.

Mayweather is accused of striking and threatening his former girlfriend, Josie Harris, stealing her mobile phone and threatening two of their children in an incident last September.

Meanwhile, Mayweather was dealt a blow in March when a federal judge refused to dismiss a defamation lawsuit against him, filed in 2009 by Filipino boxing star Manny Pacquiao.

Pacquiao alleged in his lawsuit that "Mayweather and others set out on a course designed to destroy Pacquiao's career, reputation, honor and legacy and jeopardize his ability to earn the highest levels of compensation."

Pacquiao had never tested positive for performance-enhancing drugs but in his 2009 lawsuit claimed that Mayweather, his father, uncle, promoter Oscar de la Hoya and his employee, Richard Schaefer, conducted a campaign in a set of interviews to make people think he had used them.

Amir Khan: On Katie Price, drugs and growing up -- The Independent

By Alan Hubbard, The Independent

It was nine years ago this month that I first encountered Amir Khan. He was competing in the English Schools Championships in Barnsley and an amateur boxing contact had marked my card about a "sensational" 15-year-old from Bolton. "The best kid of his age you'll ever see."

He was right. Young Amir, all flashing fists and scurrying feet, demolished his opponents in quick time, went on to become the Olympic lightweight silver medallist at 17 and, four years later, the WBA world light-welterweight champion.

Amir Khan: A Boy from Bolton: My StoryIt is some journey from Barnsley to Baguio City in the Philippines, where I tracked down Khan to chat about his upcoming title defence in Manchester against Ulster's unbeaten European champion Paul McCloskey on 16 April.

He is training there with the fabulous Filipino Manny Pacquiao, his new best friend and stablemate, in a state-of-the-art high altitude complex complete with running track and swimming pool. A far cry from his days as a schoolboy scrapper.

Over the years he has hit a few headlines as well as his opponents, though he is adamant that fame, the considerable fortune he has already amassed and the A-list company he keeps in Hollywood have not turned his head. "I'm still the same person I always was. I may look arrogant in the ring but I've always been humble. More so now because even though he is the greatest boxer in the world Manny is incredibly humble. He is an example to me, and I try to be an example to youngsters back home."

The point is well made because, at 24, Khan is not the first to discover that celebrity comes at a price. In his case Katie Price, aka Jordan, some tabloids suggesting – erroneously, he insists – that they may have indulged in a spot of horizontal sparring.

"I've learned to live with this sort of thing, it's not got to me one bit," he says. "There's absolutely nothing gone on between us. The media made it out that me and Katie were seeing each other and stuff but they've got the wrong end of the stick, we are just friends and we have only ever talked with each other. I think she is a really nice person, nothing like what people say about her in the press. Actually there are a lot of things that I am alleged to have done that I haven't." In fact there is no particular girl in his life at the moment. "I'm young and single, and married to boxing."

Having cleared that up, Khan is also happy to put the record straight about the split with his conditioning coach, Alex Ariza, following his gruelling title defence against Marcos Maidana, which Khan came close to losing in a dramatic 10th round.

The break-up, he says, had nothing to do with unfounded rumours of illegal pills and power potions being used in the Pacquiao camp – largely fuelled by Floyd Mayweather Jnr – of which he is now part. "It was nothing like that. We simply moved on. Alex was also working with Manny but now I have someone [nutritionist Michael Vale] who is working only with me. Alex and I still say hello to each other; after all, it's a professional game. But you have to do what you feel is best for yourself.

"The drugs rumours were upsetting but I can honestly say that I have never seen anything like that happening. People always say when someone is successful: 'Ah, but they take drugs, don't they?' Well, in my case it's simply not true, nor is it in Manny's.

"I've never been approached to take anything and it's something I will always stay away from, in or outside the ring. Drugs can ruin your career, people can be destroyed by drugs, and I am determined that is not going to happen to mine. I keep on training hard because it is boxing that's got me where I am and I'm not going to let that slip away."

However, Khan does admit to being annoyed at Ariza accusing his father of using Amir as a meal ticket "because he doesn't want to go back to driving cabs for a living". In fact Shah Khan is a successful businessman. "Some of the things he said about my father were very unfair, though they were said in the heat of the moment and I am sure he feels bad about it now. I didn't get that much involved, but my team thought it was best for a change.

"I'll be really strong in this fight," he adds. "I have been working on new things with Michael, tweaking things, making it a little bit tougher. I've also changed my diet and gone very organic, eating the right food at the right time, lots of fish and fresh vegetables. Now I understand what I'm eating and why I'm eating it. It's like having a petrol car, you don't put diesel in it."

Khan flies back from the Philippines today and trainer Freddie Roach will join him next week. "He'll be taking a break from preparing Manny for his next fight [against Shane Mosley] so it will be good to have him with me. I want to get this fight out of the way and then concentrate on a unification bout with Tim Bradley [the WBC champion] in the summer."

Kid Khan may be King Khan now but he happily acknowledges making a few mistakes along the way. "Most kids do when they're growing up. But I am a better, wiser person for it. I want to prove I am a true champion, someone to look up to. That has to be my legacy."

ACTION MAN AMIR KHAN -- Daily Star

By Nick Parkinson, Daily Star

AMIR KHAN has given himself four years to complete his mission of becoming an undisputed world champion in three different weight divisions.

The WBA light-welterweight champion defends his world title for the fourth time against Northern Irish challenger Paul McCloskey at the MEN Arena in Manchester on April 16 and says it may be the last time British fans see him as a ten-stone fighter.

The Man in the Arena: Selected Writings of Theodore Roosevelt: A ReaderKhan, 24, wants to get past McCloskey to set up a showdown against rival world champion Tim Bradley in America on July 23.

Unbeaten Yank Bradley holds the WBC and WBO versions of the world title.

But, despite plans to face the American, Khan (right) insists he is not overlooking the threat posed by European king McCloskey, 31.

He said: “I want to clean up at light-welterweight and then move up to welterweight and light-middleweight.
“I’ve always said 28 would be a good age for me to retire.

Bolton born-and-bred Khan, who won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympics in Athens, has a clear target of what he wants to achieve. He told the Daily Star Sunday: “I want to unify divisions and fight the best.

I have got time to do that. I want to beat the likes of Victor Ortiz, clean up there and be a true champion like Manny Pacquiao is.

“That’s why McCloskey is such a huge fight for me because I am fully aware that, if I make any mistake, these big uni-fication fights like Bradley will not happen.

“So I want to get this fight out of the way before I start thinking about unifying the title.

“It would be stupid of me to sign for a fight before my next one.

“There might be talk of a fight against Bradley in the summer but there is no way I’m looking past McCloskey.”

Khan, who is trained by Freddie Roach in the USA, said: “This will be one of my last fights at light-welterweight in Britain.

“That’s why I want people to come and watch me on the night. I want to show fans how much I have improved.”

Bolton’s world champion will this week be sparring with Pacquiao.

And he added: “I spar with Manny this week.

“I’m training at altitude, 5,500 feet up and I’m pushing myself harder than ever.”

Manny Pacquiao: The True Story of the Filipino Champion -- Ringside Report

By Manoj Bhat, Ringside Report

At a time when Floyd Mayweather is begging for recognition from fellow Americans, the unbiased boxing fan has lots of reason for getting polarized towards a small pocket sized dynamite that has over the years emerged as the human face of boxing across the world. If this trend continues as it seems likely to – chances are that future boxing will be identified into two distinct eras; one before Manny Pacquiao and the other after Manny Pacquiao hung his gloves.

Recently while travelling in Asia, I came across a Filipino family in transit. It was only a matter of time that the discussions crossed over to Manny Pacquiao and one could feel the tone and the spirit of the conversation change. Coming from a small third world country craving for heroes with a certain degree of recognition, this reaction was very normal. What was not normal was the conversation that followed. The lady of the family had been very quiet but that all changed at the point when Manny’s name was mentioned. What touched me was the intensity of support that the lady exhibited for this icon but what surprised me more was when I asked her if she liked boxing and her response was a big NO.

What is it that makes Manny Pacquiao such an attraction? What is it that makes Manny Pacquiao so likeable? What is it that makes Manny Pacquiao so intriguing and popular? Why is he so different? A deep look into these aspects tell us that the popularity of most of our sporting icons actually depends a lot on how the women of the house accept them. It is their acceptance that actually allows the TV remote to stay put on a Saturday night Prime time and despite the fact that most men would not want to agree, it is this acceptance that makes the sporting event enjoyable to watch at home. This automatically leads to the next big question. What is it that makes Manny Pacquiao what he is today and why do the women love him so much?

I asked this question to the lady among the above mentioned Filipino friends just to see if there was any logic at all in this emotion. Hardly did I realize that I had just poked the bee hive that a woman’s heart is. Manny Pacquiao seems to fit into the definition of the perfect man by the standards used to measure masculinity. Pointing at her 4 year old, she said that she’d love her son to be like Manny – a reaction I reckon not far fetched considering that it would mean a millionaire in economic terms. Her reasons however hardly had an economic twist and it was only then that the profoundness of this support dawned on me and pushed me to analyze this persona.

Manny as a son – a lot has been written about Manny’s past. Supporting a huge family even as a kid working on a construction site or putting his life on the edge in the dirty fights sounds dangerous but is hardly a reflection of the thousands of kids across the world that actually perish every year under these circumstances. Manny is resilient and a born survivor to say the least. This article is to understand why a mother would want her son to be a Manny Pacquiao, a sister have a brother like Manny and a society have a citizen like him.

The ever so respectful son that is on record to have consulted his mother, even at this stage of his career, used to bring the small change that he used to earn from his fights and put it on the family table not long ago. Imagine a small kid taking up the responsibility that the head of the house usually would be expected to stand up for.

Even as a teenager, the family was a priority for Manny and Saturday nights for him were important dates to keep. As other teenagers went out on dates to have fun, Manny would keep his dates with the survival of his kin putting his life at risk every time he entered those ruthless fights. Bruised and battered, the young boy would come home to put food on the table week in and week out. It is only natural that every mother in this world would want a son like Manny.

Manny as a brother – “the way Manny Pacquiao fights makes me feel that he is defending me against a roadside ruffian” was the quote of another lady I happened to discuss Manny with. He takes on bigger, meaner and more dangerous opponents without caring for his own safety. “The way he hits feels like he is practically telling the other guy – how dare you tease this girl. He makes you feel safe. I would love to have a brother like Manny.” Well, I wouldn’t know much about that feeling safe thing but it’s true that Manny Pacquiao has given the feeling of assurance to fans, followers as well as all those who bet on him. The grins that cross his face at the end of most rounds are perhaps reassuring to all those who support him as they know that Manny is safe and in control of the proceedings.

Manny as a friend – well this is one list that millions of people would love to find their names in. I am no exception either. Imagine the huge bills that Manny picks for his friends while on tour. With the riches that his career has brought him, Manny has helped his friends invest and grow in their lives over the years. This guy has no fear and treats money with disdain.

Here I feel compelled to compare him with the “Money” flaunting Floyd Mayweather whose obsession for money has degraded him despite being an equally talented boxer. His recent demand for 100 million only seems to show that this is not a price for appearing in the ring but the price tag for loosing the unbeaten record. Combine this with the recession in America and you feel pity for such a heartless maniac. Manny Pacquiao on the other hand however has always earned his money and spent it on his friends and countrymen in a manner that makes him easily the friendliest person to be with in the world.

Manny as a charmer – with his soft style and gracious mannerism that neatly wraps and almost hides the fighter in him, Manny Pacquiao has all the charms that make women feel weak in the knees. Talented and involved, his singing and dancing passion makes him the most desired sportsman in the world today. The fact that he keeps his wife by his side most of the time reflects how he respects the family ties. It is natural that any woman in the world would love to be close to such a humble yet passionate athlete.

In a sport where men have been traditionally aggressive even to the women, where Muhammad Ali’s divorces, Mike Tyson’s rape conviction, Holyfield’s three wives and Floyd Mayweather’s wife beating is almost a norm, Manny Pacquiao comes as a pleasant change that brings respect to the game. This in fact is one of the many reasons that the sport of boxing has started getting the attention even from the previously uninterested quarters.

Manny as a social servant – this is by far the aspect of Manny’s legacy that would be unmatched for a long long time. The compassionate young man who cared less for the fight at hand while helping the flood victims of Manila is an image that oozes love and respect from all walks of life. The spirit of this young warrior has touched the hearts of not only the down trodden of Manila but also the rich and influential across the globe. If he gets invited to the fundraising or to the white house, it is because the genuine human being inside Manny is being respected and appreciated across nations, cultures, religious groups, languages and all such manmade boundaries. There is a long record of the fact that the rebels in South Philippines maintain an unannounced ceasefire whenever Manny Pacquiao fights and it is only a matter of time that Filipinos will embrace peace and progressiveness once Manny decides to fight for their cause.

It is inevitable that when Manny decides to be ready for the highest office in his country, we would be seeing him hold the keys to the Presidential palace. Politics and its dirty horse-trading aside, there is hardly a logical reason why he should not occupy this coveted seat and direct his country on the road of development.

The recent radio interview by Floyd is a true reflection of the state in which we find our champion boxers today. If you are a true FMJ fan like I used to be, I suggest lets all stop asking him to fight Manny Pacquiao. He is really in no shape mentally for such an eventuality and instead coerces him to being just a better human being. Manny never put a price tag on his entry to the ring but chances are that he may end up earning more than a 100 million through the fights and the sponsorships even without Mayweather whereas FMJ may never get to see the figure he has dared to dream about. Will someone please make him understand that it is not all about shouting that you are the best but by taking small assured steps that lead you to be accepted as the best?
